Work Day at the Ranch for the Grace Foundation
On October 28th, we will drive out to Latrobe and work on the ranch that belongs to the Grace foundation. This foundation rescues horses that are bound for the slaughterhouse, rehabilitates them, puts them up for adoption or keeps them on the ranch. Some of the horses are part of a program that partners at-risk youth with the horses. Our job on the 28th will include painting the barn and possibly put up a fence. Weather permitting, we will host a barbecue after the event.
Time for the event is 10 AM to 2 PM with the BBQ to follow. We will need parents to help with the transportation both to and from the ranch.

Dolphin Dash
Sunday September 30 - 8:00am to 11:00am
Last year we had about 12 volunteers from the key club help with the Dolphin Dash. We would love your help again. The run this year is on a Sunday Sept. 30 from 8:00 to 11:00. If we could get about 12 to 16 volunteers to arrive at 7:30 to help family's and to direct children with the indoor circuit training would be great.
Thank You, Tracy Sunday 941-0562

Swat Team Training
Hey Everyone,
Oak Ridge is the location of Swat team training, they need people to be the hostages, and simulate a full campus. We also need parents to be coming to pick up their child and get freaked out when they realize what is going on. it is July 23-27th so THIS Monday-Friday, from 12:30-5 at Oak Ridge, You can come 1 day, you can come all or any combination of the days. You will need your parents to fill out a permission slip/health waiver. Swat will be using blanks so no harm will be done. You can pick up the waiver from the principals office (see Mrs. Botkin). We need a total of 200 volunteers, anyone 12 and up can participate.

Fall Rally !
Hi Key Clubbers,
Fall Rally is really fun, and we need lots pf people for it. It's on October 20th from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., We will leave from Oak Ridge and travel to Six Flags-Discovery Kingdom ! It is really fun but you have to be enthusiastic, because all the Key Clubbers participate in Spirit Battles, so you also HAVE TO STAY WITH THE GROUP. This is very important and will NOT be tolerated if you wander away from the group. We will have tons of fun! You will need to pay for the entrance fee into Six Flags-Discovery Kingdom/Marine World, and your food.
I will figure out the time we will leave from Oak Ridge to get to Discovery Kingdom Around 10AM and it ends around 7PM. Our Lt. Governor is hoping to see 35 members,of course we could bring more since we are the largest club out of the 16 in the division.

Sacramento Bee - Children's Book Drive
Oak Ridge is a donation site for the Sacramento Bee's Share-A-Story book drive! Each English teacher has been given the info and should be encouraging students to bring in books.
ALSO, besides bringing in books you can take your volunteering to the next level by leading book-sorting sessions!
As the third annual Share A Story Children's Book Drive is gearing into full swing, volunteers are needed to sort the books that will be collected throughout April and May.
In particular, Hands On Sacramento is looking for volunteers who are interested in being a project leader to lead book sorting sessions. Leading a book sorting session is a fun and easy way to increase your community involvement and dedication to volunteering. Book sorting sessions are about 2 to 3 hours long and are conveniently timed to fit around your work or school schedules.
Project leaders play an essential role in the success of the book drive. This year alone, we are looking to collect, sort, and redistribute over 100,000 new and gently used children's books. This large task cannot be completed without the help of our dedicated volunteers.
If you have volunteered at our book sorting sessions in previous years, we welcome you to come back as project leaders. If you have not participated in the book sorting before but would like to learn to lead sessions, we will train you to be an excellent project leader. If you are one of our current project leaders and are interested in helping out in between your projects, we appreciate your ongoing dedication.
To be a book sorting project leader, you must attend one training session and lead at least 3 sorting sessions of your choice.
If you want to sign up to be a project leader or have questions, please contact Paul - phicks@handsonsacto.org / (916) 447-7063 x305.

Community Service Trip to Costa Rica
Hey Key Clubbers,
I am organizing a trip to Costa Rica through a company called Global Works this summer, from June 3 - June 15. The emphasis of this trip is a combination of adventure (white-water rafting), culture exchange activities, and community service. The trip is NOT a Key Club trip but it will be a school sponsored trip (I'm waiting for approval from the school board). As a former Peace Corps volunteer, I believe an experience like this can be life-changing and well worth the expense. As trips go, the cost is very reasonable. A deposit of $250 is due by March 2nd, the rest of the tuition ($1500) is due by March 30th. We will need to have 14 students to make a trip.
Please spread the word, come by my room I-6 for a flyer of the tentative itinerary, and plan to attend an information meeting on Thursday Feb. 22nd at 6:30 PM in I-6.
Once I have the minimum 14 students we will assess the need and decide on additional fundraisers to help with the costs!
One other incentive....experiences like this can be an outstanding asset when it's time to submit your college applications.
Yours in service, Mrs. G

Lake Forest Annual Crab Feed and Auction
February 3rd, 2007
Students in the Key Club are cordially invited to earn service points while serving our community! We need 44 servers for our Lake Forest Annual Crab Feed and Auction. We would like to split this invitation between both of your clubs. As far as the alcohol being served, we never let the servers touch the bottles or glasses.
Your Key Club members did a fantastic job last year so, we are inviting you back and would like the National Honor Society members to join us!
This year, we need some extra people to stay to help close out our live auction as well as a few to be runners to go and get the baskets for the auction winner and take the payment to the payout area. We also would like to ask if anyone could stay to help clean up. The end of the event is 11:00pm and we must be out of the building at midnight.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Work Day December 9th at ORHS
Do you need to earn more hours? Learn how to make a simple blanket out of fleece. NO SEWING is required. We have enough fleece to make 12 blankets to donate to the food banks for children in our community. Sign up now. We will start at 10 AM and work until about 2 PM. Earn an extra hour of community service if you bring a holiday treat to share. The treats (cookies?) must be homemade and you will need to give a little info about the holiday tradition. I'll supply the drinks or punch.

Project Linus
We have several small groups supporting Project Linus. The goal is to make a blanket or a quilt that will be donated to a hospital, shelter, children's home, police officers, etc to give to a child in need. The goal is not so much to make a blanket for warmth as it is a "comfort" blanket.
Quilts are made at the home of one of our Kiwanis supporters. It will take several sessions at her house to make a quilt. Please sign up if you are interested. No prior sewing experience is needed.
Two types of blankets can be made using yarn.
Carly Polland is teaching students how to make a beautiful blanket using an "heirloom lace" loom. This is a special type of crochet. No prior experience is needed.
Jillian Spink and Carmen Siu will teach basic knitting. Besides blankets, students can make scarves that we will donate to local food banks and shelters.
Jessica Biggs and Rachel Thatcher can teach students how to make a very simple knitted hat WITHOUT using regular knitting kneedles.
All of these projects are fun to do. You can learn a new skill and earn community service hours at the same time.

Work Day at the ranch for Grace Foundation

The barbeque area has been prepped to recieve the bricks which will be laid in sand so the process will be easy and will go quickly if enough volunteers are on hand to help. Please arrive by 9:00 AM if possible.
We need 6 to 10 Key Clubbers! If you are able to help this Saturday, please email Darrell Ragland at ddragland@frontiernet.net or call him at 916-730-0122. Darrell will be the volunteer coordinator for this day.
The Kiwanis House is located at 2875 - 50th Street, Sacramento (one half block north of Broadway on 50th Street). The main number to the Family House is 736-0116, ext 100.
Sign up ASAP!
(P.S. - In the future you will be able to sign up by REPLYING to this message, in this FORUM. We will talk about this at a future Key Club meeting!)
